Mother’s Day

May 8

Mother’s Day is a special day honouring mothers and it’s celebrated throughout the world!

Mother’s Day in the UK has roots and customs that developed as far back as the Middle Ages. While Mother’s Day in North America began as a women’s movement for peace and to better the lives of others. The modern holiday that we all know today as Mother’s Day first began in 1907, when Ann Jarvis held the first Mother’s Day service in honour of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who created Mother’s Day Work Clubs alongside a suffragette, Julia Ward Howe, to address public health issues. It wasn’t until 1914, that it was proclaimed that every second Sunday of May would be designated as a national holiday honouring all mothers.

Today, we celebrate Mother’s Day to honour motherhood and the influence of mothers and mother figures in society. It is celebrated differently in many parts of the world, but many traditions include honouring mothers with flowers and celebrating with food.

This year to make any mother figure feel special, take her to your local farmers’ market for a fun outing together. Ontario has some great year-round markets that are open in early May! Grab some locally grown garlic, veggies and more to impress her with the best meal yet.

Here are some recipes you can enjoy with the special mother figures in your life:
