Ramadan is a month of fasting from sunrise to sunset observed by our Muslim neighbours and community members. The date of the observance is during the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar. This is why it changes every year.
Muslims believe that Ramadan teaches them to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, thus encouraging actions of generosity and charity (zakat). People of faith who choose to fast feel hungry and more connected to those who do not have a choice but to regularly go without food.
The pains of hunger during Ramadan connect people fasting to those who do not have food at home and make one grateful to be able to put food on the table. It connects neighbours through services, sharing gratitude with others, and coming together to help vulnerable community members.
While not all of us celebrate Ramadan and experience fasting, Ramadan teaches us all to be humble. Perhaps this year, we can take part by acting as community members to give and share. Below are some local charity organizations that you’re welcome to donate to and support:
